Task List for Portfolio
TASK 1: PREPRODUCTION OF PROJECT
Remember that you should be making an entry for every lesson that we do. This is an ongoing Home Learning and should be kept up to date and completed.
Task Check List
Every project is different and as a result a definitive list of what to do is very difficult to prescribe. Below is a list of pre-production tasks that should be seen as a guideline. If something is not going to help you complete your tasks then do not do it and if there are other things that will help you then feel free to add them.

RESEARCH
- Analyse 1 or 2 short films - preferably from the same genre that you are going to produce. (Signing up for Trigger Street Labs here might provide a good starting point when looking for films and can be used as a feedback tool once your film has been completed). It would be best if you can embed a copy of the video or at least a link to it within your blog. Consider the following questions:
- How does the narrative work? What theories can be applied i.e. Propp, Todorov, Strauss?
- How have the film makers used generic conventions to create something that the audience understand?
- How have the film makers made the film look as good as it can? What can you use in your film?
- Research Short film. Again, Trigger Street Labs could be a good place to start but you might also want to look into Short Film Festivals. Consider:
- Who makes short film?
- How is it funded?
- Why are short films made?
- How can short films be distributed?
- Research into film posters from your chosen genre.
- Include a range of annotated and deconstructed posters analysing how they reveal genre and narrative. What conventions do they display?
- Research short film posters - are they any different? Do they reflect a different method of film making? How?
- Research into Film Magazine reviews.
- Include annotated analysis of a range of magazines targeted at different audiences.
- Include reviews of films that are relevant to your genre. Consider the language that they use. How do they use layout to make the article more attractive/informative? What kinds of images do they use?
PLANNING AND PRE-PRODUCTION
- Mind map generating ideas for your short film - including exploring different genres and different ideas within each genre.
- Choose some of your ideas and consider their benefits and drawbacks - make this part of the decision making process.
- Detailed synopsis with explanation of how it demonstrates generic conventions and how it fits narrative theories. How do you know that it will work?
- Initial storyboard for short film. Photographs would work better than sketches at this stage but keep a very close eye on composition.
- Evaluation and refinement of storyboard.
- Script for short film.
- Shooting script for short film.
- Animatic of 2 short sequences from the title sequence and/or opening sequence.
- Test shots for any filmed sequences that might prove tricky like special effects or complex sequences.
- Recce shots of locations.
- Location information forms.
- Location contracts.
- Audition details, notices and contacts including any emails, letters or records of correspondence that is sent.
- Audition videos along with reflection on decisions etc.
- Casting photographs and justifications.
- Actor contracts.
- Camera set-up diagrams.
- Shooting schedule.
PRODUCTION
- Photos of the shoot days.
